Quick and Dirty Security Tips for MSPs

There’s no question about the benefits of cloud to business. But even in today’s cloud-ready world, people still have reservations regarding its security of personal and professional data. Outside of traditional cyber security measures, there are a few things you can do as an MSP to give your clients peace of mind and better position your business.

In a recent ComputerWorld article, Paul Desmond outlines four keys to ensuring security in a managed services environment. He explains the critical elements for end users. But let’s break down the key features that relate to managed services providers.

To begin, it’s important to understand your business. Let’s face it, clients are going to ask questions and it’s your responsibility and the responsibility of your employees to have the answers. As an MSP, there should be an emphasis on procedures and policies as they pertain to your business and your client security protocol. In other words, it’s critical to know when, how, and even where your business is operating and storing data.

Once you know the answers to these questions, it’s time to pay attention to your licensing. As an MSP, you should remain vigilant with security compliance and regulations, because as Desmond states, “different industries and countries have stringent rules about data privacy.”

Things to keep an eye out for include: Healthcare HIPAA, PCI, EU Model Clauses, and Safe Harbor Compliance. A failure to stay up to date and in-the-know can result in a failure to build trust with your clients, and ultimately, a decline in the success of your business.

You can keep up with legislation affecting cyber security through ISACA.
