Video: Migrate a Mailbox into Microsoft Groups

There are migration tools that can proficiently execute common migration scenarios. Then there’s MigrationWiz – the tool you depend on to handle almost any migration with maximum control and flexibility. MigrationWiz means never having to say “no” to a migration project, even if you’ve never encountered it before.

Migrating a regular mailbox into a Microsoft Groups mailbox is one of those uncommon scenarios. It happens when a group of users on Microsoft Teams all need access to a freestanding mailbox, possibly to share information or handle customer requests. You can learn this scenario with the help of BitTitan, and make it happen with MigrationWiz. All it takes is twelve minutes to watch the video, then just follow the steps given and you’ll be ready to move that mailbox and make the team happy.

What You’ll Learn in this Video

Mark, our migration expert, shows you the full migration using an actual mailbox. This scenario is similar to a regular mailbox migration, but Mark will point out a couple nuances you’ll need to understand. Here’s what you’ll learn:

Preparing the source and destination. You’ll first make sure the mailbox you’re moving has a designated location in the destination tenant. Then you’ll proceed with the application registration. This process will be slightly different between source and the destination because you’re migrating a regular mailbox into a Microsoft Groups mailbox.

Create an active service account. Set up or verify that you have an active service account on both tenants. This account can’t use MFA, so it’s advised that you use a strong password.

Set up your MigrationWiz project. You’ll follow along with the steps for creating a new Mailbox project in MigrationWiz, then set up the endpoints. This is where you’ll insert key information you collected on the source and destination tenants. The destination endpoint setup will also ask for the top level URL.

Add items for the migration. Mark will show you the different options for adding items to the project, then discuss why he chose ‘quick add’ for this project.

Apply the license. You’ll learn which licenses you can use on this project type, and why it’s always a good idea to go through the ‘verify credentials’ step before moving ahead.

Managing the data. You’ll see why it makes sense to perform a pre-stage migration prior to the final cut-over, and what that looks like within the target mailbox.

Cleanup for security. Once you’ve finished your migration, it’s always recommended that you remove the application registration so you’re not leaving a potential vulnerability in place.

Just because a migration scenario is unique doesn’t mean it has to be challenging. Our video tutorials give you the opportunity to study the nuances and get a full picture of how it works before getting started.
