Video: Migrating Microsoft Teams
The thing about MigrationWiz is that it’s so versatile, there’s always something new to learn. You can build your expertise with one type of migration – mailboxes, for example – but when a new type of project comes along, you can say ‘yes’ to that, too. That’s because you’ve got the right tool and the educational support.
Migrate Microsoft Teams? Sure, you can do that and make it look easy. Take 20 minutes to review this tutorial video and learn the secrets of a Teams-to-Teams migration. As with all BitTitan videos, you’ll be able to follow along with an actual sample project and learn important tips along the way.
What You’ll Learn in This Video
A Microsoft Teams migration project has nuances that make it different from other project types. Mark, our migration expert, will demonstrate each step. Here’s what you’ll learn:
Start with permissions. You’ll see how to enable permissions on both the source and destination/target tenants using ‘Teams Full Control.’ Once that’s done, you’ll create a security group and make the MigrationWiz service account part of that security group.
Setting up the project. In the MigrationWiz console, you’ll create a collaboration project, name it, and assign it to a customer. After the basics are complete, you’ll set up the source and destination endpoints.
Adding items into the project. There are three ways to add items: Quick add, bulk add with a CSV file, or auto-discover. In this tutorial, Mark demonstrates how to use auto-discover to bring in all the available teams so you can select the ones you want to move from a list. This option assures that the source and destination are correct. You’ll see how ‘verify credentials’ helps you make sure the selected accounts are ready to migrate.
Migrating in three passes. You’ll learn why Teams migrations are done in multiple passes. The first pass, ‘Teams creation,’ is done to set up the framework of the team – what Mark calls the scaffolding. After letting the scaffolding settle, you’ll migrate documents, OneNote, conversations, and memberships. The final pass brings over document metadata, versioning and permissions, channel tabs, and planner.
Check and double-check. An important post-migration step is verifying that everything was migrated correctly. You’ll see how to quickly check that everything was migrated properly before you mark the project complete.
Tips for a Thorough Migration
When migrating Teams, a potential complication can arise when there are conflicting or similar names at the destination. This can cause confusion when it comes to verifying which accounts have been migrated. You’ll learn how to address name issues with simple edit tools. These tools can also be used when the destination tenant uses different naming conventions.
Just 20 minutes is all it takes to educate yourself about a Teams-to-Teams migration. And, as always, your learning is supported by thorough documentation that’s accessible right from the MigrationWiz console.
