Video: Migrate Teams Private Chat

It’s incredibly easy to migrate Teams Private Chat using MigrationWiz. So what could possibly make it easier? That would be a step-by-step tutorial video that explains exactly how it’s done in only 15 minutes.

Private Chat migrations are a relatively new tool in the MigrationWiz toolbox, but it’s a vital part of any Teams migration project. The functionality has been designed so users can access and resume chats where they left off in the new tenant. And new chats can be added if your project spans multiple days.

Mark, our migration expert, demonstrates a Private Chat migration from end to end so you can see exactly what it’s going to look like before you get started on your own. As always, the tutorial is accompanied by thorough documentation in the BitTitan Help Center. Be sure to review the guide while you’re planning your migration – it includes information on what exactly can be migrated. The guide also includes cut-and-paste commands to make your job that much easier.

What You’ll Learn in This Video

A Teams Private Chat migration is nearly always a component of a Microsoft Teams migration, but it’s done separately and last – after OneDrive, mail, and teams have been migrated to their intended destination. Then it’s a simple 4-step process to move the chat:

Set up the source and destination. In the source, you’ll see how to grant permission, then create a security account and place it within a MigrationWiz security group. You’ll also set up a service account in the destination, or target, and grant permissions. You’ll get a reminder about these steps within the MigrationWiz console itself.

Create your project. Once permissions are all set, you’ll go to the MigrationWiz console and create a Collaboration (Private Chats) project, name it, and identify the endpoints.

Add people to the project. MigrationWiz gives you three options for selecting the users that will be migrated: Quick add, bulk add, or autodiscover. Mark discusses the advantages of each method, then demonstrates how to use autodiscover.

Migrate. After verifying credentials to make sure you’ve set up the endpoints properly, you can start your migration. You’ll learn how to make sure chats are properly rehydrated, as well as how to include chat history in the migration.

A great advantage to following along in this tutorial video is that you’ll get a visual picture of the migration process, including what chats will look like once they’ve been moved. This can be helpful for setting expectations with the people you’re moving.

Helpful Tips Along the Way

Mark knows all the ins-and-outs of MigrationWiz, so while he’s taking you through the Teams Private Chat project, he’s also dropping important advice that will add to the success of your project. For example, he’ll remind you to remove permissions on the source and destination once you’ve completed the migration in order to maintain security.

Don’t leave chats behind. Microsoft Teams users depend on their Private Chats to stay connected, and also to quickly locate information they need for their jobs. Now you have the tools to make sure a Teams migration is a complete migration. Learn everything you need to know in the BitTitan tutorial library or contact us if you need help or advice.
