Video: Migrate with Minimum Admin Rights

You’ve been asked to complete a Microsoft 365 migration, but the company that’s entrusted you with this project has a concern: They’re not sure if it’s a good idea to hand over global administrative rights just to facilitate the migration. You’ve got an answer: They don’t have to. With MigrationWiz, you can execute a migration without the need for global admin rights. Our new tutorial video shows you how.

What you’ll Learn in this Video

In this step-by-step video, Mark, our migration expert, explains what rights you need for a Microsoft 365 mailbox migration, then he shows you how to set them up and complete the migration. Using a demo account that includes no administrative rights, you’ll see a hands-on demonstration that shows you how to:

Start with the source tenant. You’ll need to ask the system admin to turn off MFA enforcement. This is done by going into the conditional access policy within the Microsoft Entra admin center. The service account will also need application impersonation rights on the EWS. Mark shows you how to find instructions for these tasks within the BitTitan Knowledge Base.

Complete source setup. Next, you’ll learn how to set up the application endpoint, delegate API permissions, and grant administrative consent.

Repeat with the destination tenant. The video shows you how to finalize setup in the Microsoft Entra admin center by repeating what you did for the source with the destination tenant.

Migrate using MigrationWiz. Back in the MigrationWiz console, Mark uses a single mailbox migration to demonstrate the remainder of the project. He shows you where to get the project IDs and where to paste them in.

Verify credentials and kick off the migration. MigrationWiz has a convenient function for verifying credentials so you can make sure everything is going to happen as expected. Once that step is done, you can start the full migration and watch as the data moves across.

No Need to Ask for More Rights than you Need

With MigrationWiz you certainly have the option to migrate using global administrative rights. However, many customers and clients are understandably uncomfortable handing over a full set of keys. BitTitan always recommends that migration projects be done with the least possible rights. Watching this 20-minute video and will show how your migration can be done without global rights.
